I am posting a video for you this week as well as photos of my latest endeavors. A surprising number of animals are present in my life these days in striking contrast to my previous Danish lifestyle. We currently have two cats and a dog in the house. We have the neighbors' dog (involuntarily) visiting on a frequent basis - and the occasional visit from their pigs as well - Imagine my surprise when I opened the front door and two pigs were eating out of the trash can. When I got a hold of the neighbor to tell him that his pigs had run off he asked me why I hadn't picked them up. Picked them up?
Then we have moose. I got some particularly good shots of those on our last trip to Chena Hotsprings as they were standing on the frozen lake under the bridge I was on. The moose in our yard only leaves tracks around the house, I have yet to actually encounter it. Chickens, goats and horses are in the neighborhood which is a good indicator of the somewhat rural touch that Fairbanks has combined with urban luxury such as the dog salon I visited yesterday (Saturday). Dog owners can come in on a self-serve basis to bathe their dogs or have the personnel groom their pooches. Harley got his nails cut while James and I watched other dog owners try to get their dogs up in the self-serve bath tubs. It proved quite difficult (and comical to the bystanders) because their dogs were big and heavy and were somewhat afraid of the weird-looking tubs (stalls, really) while at the same time they were trying to display the best possible dog-owner manners in the sphere of the salon. How do you pull/lift your 60 kilos (130 lb) dog up into a bathtub with dignity while people are watching?
To my delight bears are still hibernating and mosquito season has yet to begin. I will leave you with a video from this winter to lull you into thinking that animals live in perfect harmony with each other and with humans in Alaska: Natural Harmony ?
